Cubs Sign Veteran Catcher Austin Wynns to Minor League Deal

The Chicago Cubs have signed veteran catcher Austin Wynns to a minor league contract, with plans to assign him to Triple-A Iowa. This move follows Wynns' recent free agency after being outrighted by the Texas Rangers.

Wynns, who is 35 years old, adds experienced depth behind the Cubs' current catchers, Carson Kelly and Miguel Amaya. The team lacks other catchers on the 40-man roster, and their non-roster players do not have MLB experience. Prospect Owen Ayers has performed well in Triple-A after a strong showing in Double-A earlier this season.

Throughout the 2026 season, Wynns has played for three teams, starting with the Oakland Athletics before brief stints with Atlanta and Texas. He has a batting average of .146 and one home run in 89 plate appearances this season. Wynns is eligible for postseason play with the Cubs, as players only need to be in the organization by the end of August to qualify for the playoffs.
