Cyclospora Cases in the U.S. Approach 16,000, CDC Reports
A recent report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention indicates that the number of domestically acquired cyclospora cases in the United States has reached 15,716 since May of this year.
The CDC's analysis highlights that at least 11,841 additional cases may require further investigation. The data includes cases linked to a multistate outbreak associated with recalled iceberg lettuce, with 47 states reporting infections.
Michigan has been identified as the state with the highest number of cases, estimated between 4,000 and 7,000, followed by Ohio with 1,000 to 4,000 cases. The CDC noted that the actual number of infections could be higher due to unreported cases, as some individuals recover without seeking medical attention. The outbreak is currently under investigation by both the FDA and CDC.
