Ngannou left the UFC in early 2022 while still holding the heavyweight championship after rejecting contract renewal offers, which he deemed unfair. The UFC subsequently ended its exclusive negotiation period with him and characterized him as difficult to work with.

White has not provided specific details regarding his negative view of Ngannou, although he has suggested that Ngannou's behavior during contract negotiations was intimidating. Ngannou has denied these allegations. Since departing from the UFC, Ngannou has participated in boxing matches and signed with Jake Paul's MVP promotion for future events.
