Daniel Ricciardo Reflects on His Move from Red Bull to Renault
Daniel Ricciardo has shared his thoughts on the significant decision he made in 2018 to leave Red Bull Racing for Renault F1 Team. At that time, he was regarded as one of the top drivers in Formula 1, having spent a decade with Red Bull and achieving notable success.
Despite winning two races in the first half of the 2018 season, Ricciardo opted for a change when offered a deal from Renault. However, his time at Renault did not yield the expected results, as he failed to secure any podium finishes in 2019, and the team fell behind McLaren in the constructors' standings. Ricciardo later joined McLaren for the 2021 season, where he struggled, achieving only one victory before being replaced for the 2023 season.
Reflecting on his choice during a podcast, Ricciardo expressed a mix of regret and curiosity about what might have happened had he stayed with Red Bull, especially considering the success of his former teammate Max Verstappen. He acknowledged the complexity of his decision, noting a desire for change after a long tenure with Red Bull, while also recognizing Verstappen's continued improvement as a driver.
