Dean Elgar Announces Retirement from Cricket

Essex batter and former South Africa captain Dean Elgar has declared his intention to retire at the end of the current season, concluding a notable career.

Dean Elgar, the Essex batter and former captain of South Africa, has announced his retirement from cricket, effective at the end of the season.

The 39-year-old has played as an opening batter in all nine of Essex's County Championship matches this year, scoring a total of 436 runs. Earlier in the season, he achieved scores of 92 and an unbeaten 107 against Surrey, contributing to a drawn match at The Oval.

Elgar's international career spanned over 11 years, during which he accumulated 5,347 runs in 86 Tests, including 14 centuries. He made his Test debut in November 2012 against Australia. Elgar has also been a significant player in T20 and first-class formats, with 2,594 runs in 104 T20 matches and 18,981 runs in 279 first-class matches. He is set to play in the final five County Championship matches of the season, starting with a home game against Surrey.
