Debate on Road Order in WRC as New Regulations Approach
The World Rally Championship is preparing for significant changes in 2027, with new technical regulations that will see WRC27 cars compete alongside Rally2 vehicles. This shift has reignited discussions about establishing a fair road order for the events.
The introduction of WRC27 cars will replace the current Rally1 machines, adhering to a cost cap and utilizing components from Rally2. To facilitate this transition, Rally2 cars will be allowed to compete alongside WRC27 vehicles, with options for manufacturers to homologate upgrade kits to enhance aerodynamic parity.
This situation has raised concerns about road order, particularly as Rally2 cars starting further down the order may benefit from better road conditions on gravel rallies. The FIA is currently exploring options for determining road order, including the possibility of reintroducing a qualifying stage, which was last used in 2013. The FIA aims to finalize the sporting regulations by October.
