Deebo Samuel Returns to 49ers with Versatile Role
Deebo Samuel has officially rejoined the San Francisco 49ers, marking his second stint with the team. General Manager John Lynch announced that Samuel will take on various roles during games, including playing as a receiver, running back, and in the return game.
In 2021, Samuel significantly contributed to the running game with 59 carries for 365 yards and eight touchdowns, alongside 1,405 receiving yards and six touchdowns, earning him a first-team All-Pro selection. His involvement in the running game continued with 42 carries in 2022, 37 in 2023, and 42 in 2024. Last season, while with the Commanders, he had 17 carries for 75 yards.
Samuel has also been active in kick returns, recording 17 returns for 533 yards in 2024 and 15 returns for 452 yards in 2025. Despite the increased risk of injury from handling the ball frequently, he has maintained good durability throughout his career. His return is particularly crucial for the 49ers, given the absence of Ricky Pearsall for the season and the departures of Jauan Jennings and Brandon Aiyuk's uncertain status.
