Demis Hassabis Discusses AI's Evolution and Chess
Demis Hassabis, a prominent figure in artificial intelligence, recently discussed the evolution of AI in a 15-minute video, highlighting concerns about potential misuse of technology by bad actors. He emphasized the importance of ensuring that advancements in AI are used for beneficial purposes.
Hassabis explained how early AI systems, such as IBM's Deep Blue, defeated chess champions by relying on human-coded strategies rather than true understanding. These systems executed predefined rules without genuine comprehension of the game. In contrast, Hassabis's Alpha Zero employs a neural network that learns autonomously by playing numerous games against itself, ultimately surpassing human capabilities.
As a former chess prodigy, Hassabis described witnessing Alpha Zero's rapid learning process, noting its progression from random play to outperforming world champions within hours. He advocates for similar innovative approaches in developing generalized AI models. Hassabis is also recognized for his contributions to AlphaFold, an AI model that predicts protein structures, for which he received the 2024 Nobel Prize in Chemistry.
