Denis Shapovalov Retires Early in First Round at National Bank Open

Denis Shapovalov has exited the National Bank Open after retiring from his first-round match on Tuesday against Zachary Svajda.

The Canadian player, aged 27 and hailing from Richmond Hill, Ontario, withdrew while behind 3-0 in the third set. Shapovalov initially took the first set 6-4 but appeared to sustain an injury while serving late in the second set, which he lost 6-4.

After taking a medical timeout, he returned to the court but struggled with movement before deciding to retire. Svajda, ranked 87th, will move on to face 18th-seeded Arthur Fils in the next round. Shapovalov has not won a match at this tournament since 2019 and has faced challenges this season due to injuries.
