Denny Hamlin Faces Setback in Southern 500 Despite Strong Start

Denny Hamlin, the leading contender in the NASCAR Cup Series Chase, encountered difficulties during the Southern 500, finishing in 18th place. Despite leading for 68 laps and performing well in the first two stages, his race took a turn after a slow pit stop and contact with Michael McDowell on Lap 240, which damaged his car.

After repairs were made to his vehicle, Hamlin managed to return to the lead lap, but his earlier setbacks hindered his performance. His points lead over race winner Christopher Bell has now decreased to 12 points ahead of the upcoming race at Gateway on September 13.

Hamlin acknowledged the impact of the pit stop on his race, noting that mistakes in a professional sport can be costly. He remains optimistic as he heads to Gateway, where he is the defending champion.
