Denny Hamlin Questions NASCAR's Scoring System After Controversial Finish

Denny Hamlin, who secured the No. 1 seed for the upcoming postseason, expressed concerns regarding a scoring discrepancy after finishing 11th in the Coke Zero Sugar 400 at Daytona. Initially, he was shown as finishing 10th, but the official results later placed him in 11th due to a timing issue between NASCAR's system and the actual race conditions.

The controversy arose from the race's conclusion, which was affected by a caution triggered by a collision involving Tyler Reddick and Zane Smith. This incident led to confusion about the running order as NASCAR had to determine positions at the moment the caution was declared. While Hamlin was initially listed 10th, the final results credited Josh Berry with 9th, Cole Custer with 10th, and Hamlin with 11th.

Hamlin pointed out that discrepancies in the timing of caution lights and the internal timestamps used by NASCAR may have contributed to the confusion. He presented evidence, including camera footage and a photograph showing the No. 21 car passing a green light while the No. 41 was behind. Although the difference in finishing position did not impact his points, Hamlin urged NASCAR to investigate the issue to ensure consistency in their scoring system.
