Derek Carr Joins UCLA Coaching Staff After NFL Retirement

Derek Carr, the former quarterback for the Oakland and Las Vegas Raiders, is returning to football in a coaching capacity at UCLA after retiring in May 2025. He has opted to begin his coaching career rather than accept offers from six NFL teams that sought his return as a player.

UCLA officially announced Carr's hiring on August 10, where he will serve as a special advisor to head coach Bob Chesney. Carr's primary role will involve mentoring the team's young quarterbacks and contributing to game plans and offensive strategies.

Chesney expressed enthusiasm about Carr's addition, highlighting his passion for developing players. Carr, who had a successful 11-year NFL career, is expected to bring valuable experience to the program as UCLA prepares for competition in the Big Ten conference.
