Derek Law Becomes Free Agent After Designation
Derek Law, a veteran reliever, is now a free agent after being designated for assignment by the Arizona Diamondbacks in mid-September. Following this designation, he passed through waivers and was outrighted to Triple-A before opting for free agency.
Law joined the Diamondbacks on a minor league contract in January while recovering from flexor tendon surgery. His debut with the team was delayed until late August due to a setback during his rehabilitation. Although he allowed a run in his first appearance, he subsequently recorded six scoreless outings.
At 36 years old, Law has struggled with velocity, averaging a career-low 93.2 mph on his fastball during his time with Arizona, compared to 95.1 mph with the Nationals in 2024. The Diamondbacks faced significant bullpen injuries this past season, with key players sidelined, and will need to fill several spots as they prepare for the 2027 season.
