Diamondbacks Confirm Joe Mather as Hitting Coach for 2027
The Arizona Diamondbacks have announced that Joe Mather will continue as their hitting coach for the 2027 season, marking his sixth year in this position. This decision follows the recent two-year contract extension given to manager Torey Lovullo on October 1, 2026.
Mather, who previously played in the majors from 2008 to 2012, joined the Diamondbacks as a minor league coach in 2015. After a stint as the assistant hitting coach for the Cincinnati Reds, he returned to Arizona. Under his guidance, the team has scored the fifth-most runs in Major League Baseball, although their performance dipped this past season.
Despite the Diamondbacks finishing with an 86-76 record and missing the playoffs, Mather oversaw notable performances, including catcher Gabriel Moreno winning the NL batting title. However, some key players, such as Ketel Marte, faced challenges, prompting management to consider potential changes in the roster for the upcoming season.
