Diamondbacks Designate Closer Paul Sewald for Assignment

The Arizona Diamondbacks recently made a surprising roster change after their series victory against the Los Angeles Dodgers. On Monday, the team designated Paul Sewald for assignment, as reported by Phoenix sports talk host John Gambadoro.

Sewald, who has served as the team's closer this season and is tied for eighth in the majors with 24 saves, had not recorded a save since July 24 and was no longer utilized in his typical closing role. This move was necessary to activate right-hander Michael Soroka ahead of Monday's game.

Despite his 24 saves, Sewald struggled this season, posting a 6.23 ERA over 45 appearances. He allowed 11 runs in his last seven outings, including a game against the Cleveland Guardians where he gave up five runs without recording an out. His season has been marred by a high number of home runs, with 12 allowed in 39 innings, marking the most he has ever surrendered in a single season.
