Diamondbacks Designate Lourdes Gurriel Jr. for Assignment
The Arizona Diamondbacks have designated outfielder Lourdes Gurriel Jr. for assignment, which creates an opening on their 40-man roster. Infielder Jose Fernandez has been called up from Triple-A Reno to take Gurriel's place on the active roster.
This decision effectively concludes Gurriel's nearly four-season tenure with the team. He was acquired in December 2022 as part of a trade with the Blue Jays and played a significant role in the Diamondbacks' 2023 NL pennant run. Gurriel had a three-year, $42 million contract with the team, reflecting his contributions both on the field and in the clubhouse.
After a solid 2024 season, Gurriel's performance declined in 2025, and he faced injuries, including a torn ACL. Although he returned to play in April 2026, his batting average dropped significantly, prompting the Diamondbacks to part ways with him as they compete for an NL wild card spot. Gurriel's contract includes a $14 million club option for 2027, which is expected to be bought out. Given his recent struggles and injuries, it is likely that he will clear waivers and be released, potentially leading to a minor league deal in the offseason.
