Diamondbacks Designate Paul Sewald for Assignment
The Arizona Diamondbacks will designate right-handed pitcher Paul Sewald for assignment, as reported by John Gambadoro of 98.7 FM Arizona Sports. Sewald, who rejoined the team on a one-year contract during the offseason, has primarily served as the closer this season.
Initially, Sewald performed well, achieving 18 saves by June 19 with a 3.18 ERA. However, his performance declined significantly after late June, where he struggled with home runs and allowed 17 runs in his last 10 2/3 innings, resulting in a 14.34 ERA during that stretch.
Sewald's contract included a base salary of $1.5 million, with additional incentives that brought the total to $1.85 million for his time with the team. Following the trade deadline, the Diamondbacks can only place him on waivers, where he is expected to clear and potentially become a free agent.
