Disabled Teen Advocates for Accessibility Improvements in Liverpool
A 14-year-old boy from Everton, who has cerebral palsy and uses an electric wheelchair, is advocating for the installation of dropped kerbs near his home to improve accessibility. Jack is pushing Liverpool City Council to make these changes so he can visit local shops independently.
After learning that the council had no plans for alterations in his area, Jack initiated a petition requesting dropped kerbs along the route from Mere Lane to Rash's Convenience Store on Breckfield Road North. He emphasized that the lack of dropped kerbs forces him and others to navigate into the road, posing risks from traffic and hindering their mobility.
Jack's campaign has gained support from staff and users at The Breckfield Centre, where he has been a member for five years. A spokesperson for the council acknowledged the importance of dropped kerbs for community mobility but stated that they currently lack the capacity to implement new installations outside of planned works for the financial year.
