Disagreement Between Sirianni and Hurts on Eagles' Final Drive Management
During a recent game, Eagles coach Nick Sirianni accepted responsibility for the decision to kick off with eight seconds remaining while leading by one point against Jacksonville. However, he did not take blame for the management of the preceding scoring drive, which could have left the Jaguars with less time.
The Eagles had a first down at the Jacksonville 34 after a completion from quarterback Jalen Hurts to tight end Dallas Goedert. Following this, the Jaguars called a timeout with 25 seconds left. Hurts then threw an incomplete pass, followed by a completion to receiver Makai Lemon, who went out of bounds after a seven-yard gain. A subsequent run resulted in a three-yard loss, leading to the Jaguars' final timeout with 12 seconds remaining.
In a postgame interview, Hurts indicated he felt uncertain about the clock management during the drive. He mentioned the internal conflict of whether he should have intervened. Sirianni, however, emphasized that Hurts was focused on executing plays rather than making calls. He explained the rationale behind their final drive strategy, stating that they practice such situations regularly and aim to advance the ball to ease the kicker's job. Sirianni expressed no regrets about the decisions made prior to the final kickoff, while Hurts appeared to have lingering doubts about the execution of the drive.
