Dodgers Revamp Catching Staff with Ben Rortvedt's Selection
The Los Angeles Dodgers have announced a major overhaul of their catching staff, selecting the contract of catcher Ben Rortvedt and activating Hunter Feduccia. This decision comes as part of a series of four moves involving their backstops, which also includes optioning Eliezer Alfonzo to Triple-A Oklahoma and designating Chuckie Robinson for assignment.
This year has seen significant changes in the Dodgers' catching plans. Will Smith and Dalton Rushing initially formed the catching duo, but Smith has been sidelined for nearly two months due to a neck injury. Robinson filled in with Rushing during June, but the team shifted to Alfonzo in July. Following the recent trade deadline, the Dodgers acquired both Feduccia and Rortvedt, while Rushing was placed on the injured list due to elbow inflammation.
Despite Rortvedt's struggles at the plate, with a career batting line of .190/.279/.270 in 633 major league plate appearances, the Dodgers value his defensive capabilities. The team has pursued him multiple times, including last year's trade deadline. After signing him to a $1.25 million deal to avoid arbitration, Rortvedt was placed on waivers but was claimed by the Reds. After a series of transactions, he returned to the Dodgers, who have now opted to give him a spot on the major league roster.
