Dolphins Edge Patriots in First Matchup of Tagovailoa and Jones

Five years ago, Tua Tagovailoa and Mac Jones faced off for the first time as starting quarterbacks, with Tagovailoa leading the Miami Dolphins to a 17-16 victory over the New England Patriots at Gillette Stadium on September 12, 2021.

Tagovailoa contributed two touchdowns, including a three-yard run that capped a 10-play, 80-yard opening drive. After the Patriots took a brief lead with Jones' first career touchdown pass to Nelson Agholor, Miami tied the game with a Jason Sanders field goal before halftime.

The Dolphins regained the lead early in the second half with a touchdown pass from Tagovailoa to Jaylen Waddle. Although the Patriots managed to score two field goals and advanced to the Miami 11-yard line late in the game, a fumble by running back Damien Harris allowed Miami to secure the win. Tagovailoa finished with 201 passing yards, while Jones threw for 281 yards.
