Don Mattingly Aims to Revitalize Phillies' Stolen Base Strategy
The Philadelphia Phillies finished the 2026 MLB season ranked 15th with 105 stolen bases, a stark contrast to their top-ten performance in the first half, where they recorded 74 stolen bases. However, the team struggled significantly after the All-Star break, managing only 31 stolen bases, including just nine in a challenging September.
Don Mattingly, entering his first full season as manager, has identified improving the run game as a key focus. He noted the need for better baserunning and intends to leverage the team's speed more effectively. Players like Trea Turner, Bryson Stott, and Justin Crawford, who have shown potential on the bases, will be encouraged to take more risks, despite concerns about injuries and wear from increased running.
Mattingly emphasized that enhancing the run game could diversify the team's offensive strategy, allowing for more varied scoring methods beyond relying solely on home runs. He believes that a more aggressive approach on the bases could lead to greater success throughout the season and into the playoffs.
