Don Mattingly Reflects on His Role with the 2026 Phillies
Don Mattingly has been confirmed as the full-time manager of the Philadelphia Phillies, signing a two-year contract that extends through 2028. He noted that the 2026 team was not originally his, as he took over mid-season after the firing of Rob Thomson.
Mattingly stepped in as interim manager on April 28 when the team had a 9-19 record. Under his leadership, the Phillies achieved a 79-55 record and secured a wild-card spot, although they were eliminated in the NL Wild Card Series by the Atlanta Braves. The team concluded the season with an overall record of 88-74.
Looking forward, Mattingly aims to implement changes to enhance the team's performance, focusing on improving defense, baserunning, and offensive versatility. The Phillies are also making coaching changes, including the hiring of Carlos Mendoza for infield and third-base coaching, while searching for a new hitting coach. Mattingly's familiarity with the roster is expected to provide stability as the team aims for its first World Series title since 2008.
