Don Nelson, NBA Champion and Coaching Pioneer, Passes Away at 86

Don Nelson, a five-time NBA champion with the Boston Celtics and a prominent figure in basketball coaching, passed away at the age of 86, as confirmed by his family. The cause of death has not been disclosed.

Nelson, who began his coaching career in 1976, is recognized for his innovative fast-paced offensive strategy known as 'Nellie Ball.' He achieved a career coaching record of 1,335 wins, ranking second in NBA history, and was inducted into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame in 2012.

Throughout his 31-season coaching career, Nelson led four different franchises, including the Milwaukee Bucks and Golden State Warriors. He was instrumental in the Dallas Mavericks' success in the early 2000s, helping to acquire key players like Dirk Nowitzki and Steve Nash. Despite not winning an NBA title as a coach, he made 18 playoff appearances and is remembered for his significant contributions to the game.
