DoorDash Acquires Instacart for $17 Billion
DoorDash has confirmed its acquisition of Instacart, a grocery delivery service, in a deal valued at $17 billion, announced on Thursday morning.
The agreement involves DoorDash paying $65 per share for Instacart, representing a 26% premium over the stock's closing price on October 22. The transaction will be financed with 75% cash, and Instacart shareholders can choose between cash, DoorDash stock, or a mix of both. The deal has received unanimous approval from Instacart's board.
DoorDash's CEO noted the challenges of online grocery delivery and expressed confidence that combining their delivery network with Instacart's experience could enhance services for local stores. Following the announcement, DoorDash's stock rose over 5% in premarket trading, while Instacart's stock saw a slight decline. The acquisition is seen as a strategic move to compete against Walmart and Amazon in the grocery delivery sector.
