Dortmund Chess Festival: Bluebaum and Svane Start Strong

The A Open at the Dortmund Chess Festival commenced on Saturday, featuring several top-rated players. Matthias Bluebaum, Rasmus Svane, and Andrew Hong, all rated above 2600, achieved victories, while Dmitrij Kollars and David Navara drew their matches.

The tournament began with 101 boards in play, and the B Open had already started earlier in the day. In the first round, six games were won by lower-rated players, and 19 ended in draws. Five players opted for a bye, earning half a point.

Among the 16 grandmasters participating, Bluebaum, Svane, and Hong stood out. Bluebaum, returning from Biel, defeated Alfred Parvanyan, while Svane triumphed over Robert Prieb. The tournament organizers noted the competitive nature of the matches, as evidenced by the draws from Kollars and Navara against lower-rated opponents. After the first round, Gerhard Nolte led the standings due to a bye point, but this is expected to change in subsequent rounds.
