Drew Brees Considered Comeback with Broncos for AFC Championship

Former NFL quarterback Drew Brees was presented with an opportunity to return to the field last season for the Denver Broncos during the AFC championship game.

After quarterback Bo Nix suffered a leg injury, then-offensive coordinator Joe Lombardi reached out to Brees, who had recently turned 47. Brees reportedly contemplated the offer but decided against it after experiencing wrist pain during a workout.

Jarrett Stidham took over as the starting quarterback, completing 17 of 31 passes for 133 yards, one touchdown, and one interception in a loss to the New England Patriots. Brees, who retired in March 2021 and was inducted into the Hall of Fame this past summer, would have reunited with head coach Sean Payton, with whom he had significant success at the New Orleans Saints. However, Payton was unaware of Lombardi's plan to recruit Brees until the summer.
