Drew Brees Considered NFL Comeback Amid Broncos Quarterback Crisis

Drew Brees, a Hall of Fame quarterback, contemplated a return to the NFL during the 2025-26 season after the Denver Broncos faced a quarterback crisis. Following the injury of starting quarterback Bo Nix, Brees was approached by the Broncos' then-offensive coordinator Joe Lombardi and assistant Pete Carmichael about the possibility of coming out of retirement.

Despite the discussions, which took place without head coach Sean Payton's knowledge, Brees experienced discomfort in his wrist during a workout, leading him to abandon the idea of a comeback. Brees, who last played in 2020 and retired in March 2021 after a successful 20-year career, would have been 47 at the time of the attempted return.

Ultimately, the Broncos opted for Jarrett Stidham as their quarterback, resulting in a narrow loss to the New England Patriots. The plan to bring Brees back was reportedly serious, with Lombardi and Carmichael believing he could significantly contribute to the team's success.
