Duleep Trophy's Relevance Questioned Amid Selection Changes

The Duleep Trophy commenced recently in Bengaluru, but its significance is under scrutiny after the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) eliminated the role of national selectors in choosing zonal teams. BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia announced that the final will be held at MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai, citing expected fan attendance.

Traditionally, the tournament serves as a platform for top performers from the Ranji Trophy to compete. However, its importance has waned, particularly with the rise of the Indian Premier League (IPL). This year, the BCCI reverted to an inter-zonal format, leading to controversial selections, such as the exclusion of Delhi opener Sanat Sangwan despite his impressive performance in the Ranji Trophy.

Former national selector Devang Gandhi emphasized the need for selectors to be involved in the process to maintain the tournament's integrity. He noted that without accountability, state-level politics could undermine the selection process. The Duleep Trophy is also seen as a pathway for players to be considered for India 'A' teams, with upcoming matches against Australia 'A' adding to its stakes.
