Dusty May, who achieved rapid success at Michigan, has decided to leave the college basketball program to take on the head coaching role with the Dallas Mavericks. May expressed frustration over the challenges posed by the transfer portal and the administrative burdens that detracted from his coaching focus. He acknowledged that while he had envisioned continuing at Michigan, the opportunity with the Mavericks, particularly with a promising young player like Cooper Flagg and a supportive management team, was too significant to pass up. He officially accepted the Mavericks position on June 22.
Reflecting on his time at Michigan, May noted the satisfaction of building a sustainable program and the excitement of potentially defending their national title. However, he also recognized the persistent issues within college basketball, such as the instability of player commitments. As he transitions to the NBA, May hopes to leverage his experience and adapt to the professional coaching landscape.
