Eagles Sign Running Back Ian Wheeler to Practice Squad
The Philadelphia Eagles announced the addition of running back Ian Wheeler to their practice squad on Thursday, a move made necessary by injuries within the team's backfield.
Wheeler, 25, began his professional career as an undrafted free agent after leaving Howard University. He initially signed with the Chicago Bears, where he made an appearance on Hard Knocks and showed promise during the preseason until a knee injury cut his rookie season short. After being waived by the Bears, he spent time on the New Orleans Saints' practice squad and later played for the Louisville Kings in the UFL, where he excelled, rushing for 371 yards and six touchdowns in nine games.
His signing comes as the Eagles face significant injuries, with Saquon Barkley, Tank Bigsby, and Will Shipley all sidelined. This leaves Dameon Pierce and Carson Steele as the main active running backs. Wheeler's versatility and previous performance in the UFL provide the Eagles with additional depth as they navigate their current challenges.
