ECB Discontinues Rooney Rule for Coaching Recruitment
The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has announced the discontinuation of the Rooney Rule in its recruitment of coaches for national teams, stating that its hiring practices have evolved over time.
Initially adopted in 2018, the Rooney Rule required the ECB to interview at least one candidate from an ethnic minority background for coaching positions. However, the ECB confirmed that this rule was not consistently applied in recent appointments, including those made for the men's and women's teams since 2024.
The ECB emphasized its ongoing commitment to diversity and inclusion in cricket, noting that it employs various recruitment strategies tailored to specific roles. The organization aims to enhance the representation of ethnically diverse and female coaches through its coaching pathway, which has seen a notable percentage of participants from diverse backgrounds in advanced training programs.
