Edmonton Marathon Course Found to Be Over 674 Meters Long
The organisers of the Edmonton Marathon have confirmed that the course for the 2026 event was measured to be over 674 meters longer than the standard distance. This admission follows complaints from runners who noticed discrepancies on their GPS devices, indicating the race exceeded the official marathon distance of 26.22 miles.
Initially, the organisers dismissed these concerns, but later acknowledged the error in a statement. Race director Tom Keogh expressed regret, stating that the additional distance impacted the finishing times of participants, which may have affected their chances of qualifying for the Boston Marathon.
The mistake was attributed to construction work around the Wellington Bridge, which necessitated a detour from the usual route. The organisers are currently collaborating with Athletics Canada and other partners to address how the results from this year's race will be validated.
