Edson Barboza Retires After UFC Career Ending Loss
Edson Barboza, a 40-year-old lightweight fighter, officially retired from the UFC after losing to Esteban Ribovics at UFC 330 in Philadelphia. This match marked the end of his 16-year career with the promotion, during which he participated in 33 fights and faced six future champions.
Barboza revealed that he had already decided to retire before entering the cage, despite struggling with the decision. He noted that his last three opponents were the types of fighters he would have easily defeated a decade ago, but acknowledged that his physical capabilities have diminished significantly.
After a series of losses, including a four-fight skid, Barboza expressed that accepting his limitations was challenging but ultimately brought him peace. He plans to transition into coaching and possibly open his own gym, while also supporting his children in their sports endeavors. Despite the loss, nearly 20,000 fans in attendance honored him with a standing ovation, which he regarded as more meaningful than a victory.
