EFL Homegrown Player Rules Explained
The English Football League (EFL) has established regulations regarding homegrown players for clubs in the Championship, League One, and League Two. Each club is required to have at least eight homegrown players registered in their squad.
During league matches, teams must include a minimum of seven homegrown players in their matchday squad. A homegrown player is defined as someone who has been registered with their current club or any English or Welsh club for a minimum of three seasons before their 21st birthday.
These rules apply exclusively to league matches and do not extend to cup competitions such as the FA Cup or EFL Trophy. For instance, in Watford's recent match against Charlton Athletic, only two players in their squad were English, while others represented different countries but qualified as homegrown based on their youth club registrations.
