Eight Americans Compete in Champions League, Led by Johnny Cardoso
The Champions League is set to begin on Tuesday, featuring eight American players, including Johnny Cardoso, Ricardo Pepi, and Sergiño Dest. While some of the biggest U.S. stars will be in the Europa League, this year's Champions League highlights the increasing number of Americans competing at high levels in European soccer.
Among the participants, Johnny Cardoso is returning to the Champions League with Atletico Madrid after an injury affected his World Cup chances. He has been coming off the bench but aims to regain a starting position. Ricardo Pepi, a key player for PSV, has made over 100 appearances for the club and is looking to add to his Champions League tally of six goals and four assists.
Other notable players include Mathis Albert, a promising talent from Dortmund, and Alex Freeman, who recently moved to Villarreal. Samuel Adeniran, now with LASK, and George Bello, also with LASK, are looking to make their mark in the tournament. Lastly, Giorgio De Marzi, a young goalkeeper for Roma, is gaining valuable experience despite being a third-choice keeper.
