During the match, Swiatek was leading 4-1 when Rybakina experienced discomfort. After struggling with her movement and failing to complete a rally, she called for a medical evaluation and ultimately decided she could not continue. Following the match, Rybakina reported significant pain and difficulty walking, indicating that an MRI would be necessary to assess the injury's severity.

Rybakina had been managing ankle issues prior to the tournament but felt fine until a misstep during the match. Her retirement not only ended her hopes of dethroning Aryna Sabalenka, who had been eliminated earlier, but also raised concerns about her fitness ahead of the upcoming US Open.
