Engstler Secures Pole Position at DTM Hockenheim as Preining Eyes Championship
Luca Engstler achieved pole position during the DTM qualifying session at Hockenheim, showcasing a strong performance on a drying track. The session was marked by difficult conditions, with drivers initially opting for wet tyres before switching to slicks, a strategy that did not yield the expected results for many.
Engstler, driving for Abt-Lamborghini, recorded a time of 1:47.048, marking his first pole in the DTM. Lucas Auer from Landgraf-Mercedes followed closely in second place, finishing 0.407 seconds behind. Thomas Preining, the current DTM leader, secured third position despite having a lap time disqualified due to track limits.
Preining, who can clinch the championship with a win in the race, faced challenges with his tyre strategy but remains optimistic about his chances. Other title contenders, including Maro Engel and Marco Wittmann, struggled in the qualifying session, finishing seventh and eleventh respectively, which complicates their pursuit of the title. The race is set to begin at 13:30, with Preining aiming to solidify his championship status.
