Essendon Faces Significant Fine from AFL After Player Incident
Essendon Football Club is facing another significant fine from the AFL due to a seventh incident involving careless contact with an umpire. This latest occurrence involved midfielder Jye Caldwell, who accidentally made contact with an official during a match against Sydney at the MCG.
The AFL has been actively working to reduce such incidents, responding to concerns from the AFL Umpires Association regarding the frequency of these occurrences and the risks posed to umpires. Previously, the league indicated that clubs with five incidents would face a $50,000 fine, although they have not yet imposed that maximum penalty.
Essendon received a $20,000 fine for its fifth incident and a $10,000 fine for the sixth. Other clubs, including Western Bulldogs, Fremantle, and Gold Coast, have also faced similar fines. Caldwell has until Tuesday to appeal the fine, and the AFL will make a decision later in the week regarding any further penalties for the Bombers.
