Essendon Fined for Umpire Contact Incident
Essendon has been penalized with a $10,000 fine due to its sixth incident of contact with an umpire, which occurred during Round 20 of the season.
This incident involved player Sam Durham against Hawthorn, and follows a previous fine of $20,000 for the club's fifth incident. The AFL has implemented stricter measures regarding umpire contact this year, having recorded 91 offenses last season.
The recent sanction is expected to set a precedent for future offenses, as other clubs, including Western Bulldogs and Fremantle, have also faced fines for similar incidents. A recent AFLPA survey indicated that a significant number of players are uncertain about the fairness of these sanctions and the rules surrounding umpire contact.
