EU Plans Increased Sanctions Against Russia Following Drone Attack

European Commission chief Ursula von der Leyen announced on Wednesday that the EU will intensify pressure on Russia, including the implementation of new sanctions, following a drone attack at Leipzig/Halle Airport in Germany.

The drone, discovered last month, was equipped with explosives and a detonator, raising concerns about Moscow's increasing recklessness. Germany has attributed the attack to Russia, viewing it as part of a broader strategy to intimidate nations supporting Ukraine since the invasion in 2022.

In response to the attack, the EU and several member states summoned Russian embassy officials, with Germany planning to close its consulate in Bonn. Concurrently, Germany is investigating two new suspected sabotage incidents affecting power infrastructure, which authorities believe may involve foreign powers or extremist groups. These developments occur as the far-right Alternative for Germany party gains traction ahead of upcoming elections.
