Eugenio Suarez's Future in Free Agency
Eugenio Suarez, a slugger who returned to the Cincinnati Reds this season, faced challenges that led to his placement on waivers in August. After spending most of his career with the Reds, he was expected to provide veteran leadership but struggled significantly, striking out every three at-bats.
Suarez has a mutual option worth $16 million for 2027, but he is likely to enter free agency. His defensive performance has been subpar, with a -4 Defensive Runs Saved over 50 games. Although his 2026 season appeared disappointing, marked by a career-high strikeout rate of 33.9%, he did show signs of improvement in the latter part of the season.
After recovering from an oblique strain that sidelined him for a month, Suarez had a strong finish, hitting 12 home runs in the final two months and reducing his strikeout rate below 30%. Despite his overall numbers being underwhelming, he still managed to hit 26 home runs in 498 plate appearances. With a thin market for right-handed designated hitters, a healthy Suarez could be a valuable asset for teams looking to bolster their lineup.
