EuroLeague Rejects NBA Merger Proposal
EuroLeague basketball owners have formally rejected an NBA proposal to merge into a single European operation, following a meeting in Cernobbio, Italy. This decision was confirmed by Barcelona on Wednesday.
The rejection occurred during a gathering of the EuroLeague's 13 shareholder clubs, which include notable teams such as Bayern Munich and Real Madrid. Barcelona's president, Joan Laporta, was present at the meeting where the clubs discussed strategic decisions for the future of the competition.
While the NBA's offer included a significant financial incentive, the EuroLeague clubs decided not to accept it in its current form. They indicated that they would reconsider if the proposal were amended in the future. The EuroLeague is currently composed of 20 teams, with 13 clubs holding shareholder status, and plans are underway to convert existing licenses into franchises.
