Everton Football Club Up for Sale as Owners Seek Exit
Everton Football Club is officially up for sale as its owners, The Friedkin Group (TFG), announced their decision in a statement released on Friday. This comes after TFG, who acquired a 99.5% stake in the club for over £400m in December 2024, faced increasing criticism from fans during their ownership.
TFG's tenure has been characterized by a lack of engagement with the club, highlighted by chairman Dan Friedkin's absence from matches and failure to communicate with manager David Moyes. The relationship soured further after a controversial attempt to sell promising young player Harrison Armstrong, which sparked significant backlash from supporters. Following this, the club's financial situation has also been a concern, with debts around £468m and a recent £35m payment to Burnley over a breach of financial rules.
Football finance expert Kieran Maguire noted that TFG is likely seeking between £750m and £800m for the club, capitalizing on a strong market for potential buyers. Despite the challenges faced, TFG has provided some financial stability compared to the previous ownership, making Everton an attractive option for prospective investors.
