Extreme Heat Forces Riders to Abandon Vuelta a España

The Vuelta a España is facing severe challenges as extreme heat impacts the race, leading to multiple rider withdrawals. On Thursday, during stage 12, six riders exited the competition, including Arthur Kluckers, who was taken to a hospital after experiencing dizziness in temperatures reaching 38°C (100°F).

Kluckers, from Tudor Pro Cycling, was reported to have suffered a syncopal episode but did not lose consciousness. His team confirmed he was treated and is being arranged for a return home. Other riders, such as Ben Tulett and Jay Vine, also withdrew due to ongoing injuries and illness, respectively.

The harsh conditions are expected to persist, with forecasts predicting temperatures could soar to 40°C (104°F) for stage 13. As a precaution, race officials have relaxed feeding regulations to help riders cope with the heat. A total of 25 riders have abandoned the race so far, a number consistent with typical attrition rates at this stage of the event.
