FA Introduces New Safety Rules for Pitchside Barriers After Billy Vigar's Death

The Football Association has announced new regulations regarding pitchside barriers following the death of Billy Vigar, a former Arsenal youth player, who died in September 2025 after colliding with a concrete barrier during a match for Chichester City.

The FA's updated criteria require clubs in the National League system to eliminate solid brick or concrete walls around pitches or cover them with padding. Approximately 160 clubs have been notified about necessary modifications to their stadiums.

This decision follows a safety review initiated after Vigar's tragic incident, which also prompted calls for improved safety measures from the Professional Footballers Association. The FA and Premier League will provide funding to assist clubs in implementing these changes, emphasizing the importance of player safety.
