Fabiano Caruana Aims for Fifth Consecutive US Championship Title
Fabiano Caruana is set to defend his title at the 2026 US Championship in Saint Louis, where he has the chance to achieve a feat not accomplished in over eighty years. The 34-year-old has won the championship for four consecutive years from 2022 to 2025, and a fifth win would match Samuel Reshevsky's record from 1936 to 1942.
Caruana has a total of five US Championship titles, with his first victory occurring in 2016. His recent streak began six years later, placing him among notable champions like Jackson Showalter and Hikaru Nakamura. Only Walter Browne, with six titles, and Bobby Fischer and Reshevsky, each with eight, have more championships.
Caruana's journey in the US Championship is unique; he initially represented Italy before returning to the US federation in 2015. His debut in the championship was marked by an unbeaten performance, securing the title outright. Since then, he has consistently performed well, including a notable victory in 2025 that solidified his status as a four-time champion.
