Fabiano Caruana Takes Early Lead at Sinquefield Cup

Fabiano Caruana claimed the sole lead in the opening round of the Sinquefield Cup by defeating Jorden van Foreest in Saint Louis. The tournament features a prize fund of $475,000 and serves as the final event of the Grand Chess Tour.

While Caruana was the only player to win, the other four games concluded in draws. Javokhir Sindarov came close to joining Caruana at the top but ultimately drew against Levon Aronian after mismanaging a two-pawn advantage.

Caruana's victory over Van Foreest followed a theoretical variation of the Italian opening. After an early misstep by Van Foreest, Caruana gained a pawn and maintained pressure, ultimately winning after 55 moves. In the next round, Caruana will play with the black pieces against Anish Giri.
