Faf du Plessis Reaches Out to Steve Smith During Ball-Tampering Scandal
Faf du Plessis, the former captain of South Africa, has recounted his support for Steve Smith during the 2018 ball-tampering incident in Cape Town. Du Plessis reached out to Smith after the Australian captain took responsibility for the scandal, questioning why he felt the need to do so.
During an interview, du Plessis expressed empathy for Smith, recalling the intense media pressure he faced, which reminded him of his own experience in 2016 when he was accused of ball tampering. He sent Smith a message of solidarity, acknowledging that Smith had done nothing wrong and encouraging him to stay strong amidst the turmoil.
Du Plessis noted that he did not foresee the severe consequences that followed, including one-year suspensions for Smith and David Warner, and a nine-month ban for Cameron Bancroft. He also highlighted how Smith had previously defended him during his own controversy, which left a lasting impression on the South African team.
