Falcons Face Quarterback Challenges Ahead of Season Opener

The Atlanta Falcons are starting the 2026 season with significant challenges at the quarterback position, even before their first game. Michael Penix Jr. is recovering from an ACL injury, leading to Tua Tagovailoa being named the starter. However, Tagovailoa suffered an oblique injury during practice, prompting Cooper Rush to take over the starting role.

Now, just before the season opener against the Pittsburgh Steelers, Rush is experiencing back spasms but is still expected to start. If he is unable to play, the Falcons would have to rely on undrafted rookie Jack Strand, who has limited experience at the Division II level.

Despite the uncertainty surrounding Rush's health, he aims to demonstrate his capability as a starter until Penix returns to full fitness. Rush previously had a successful stint as a starter with the Dallas Cowboys, going 4-4 in 2024.
